Bitwarden unfortunately needs me to re-enter the master password every time I close the app. I also miss 1Password "mini"on the desktop - a service which kept 1Password running in the background (and therefore not needing me to enter the master password again even if I were to close the app). That way, I still have some control in case of an ugly breach of data. This is also the reason I don't store TOTPs in Bitwarden cloud. Bitwarden fits the bill perfectly here too. Unfortunately playing sysadmin is tiring after a point and I want someone else to take care of complexities like securing remote servers and updating server configurations. Bitwarden stores passwords remotely too, but I trust them more (I understand both these services only store encrypted passwords). 1Password is unfortunately ending their support for standalone vaults in the next version and henceforth all passwords will have to be stored on their servers. I also miss storing passwords in a cloud storage provider of my choice (say Dropbox). Hopefully Bitwarden developers will implement more UI flourishes in the future. These are very easy to implement but incredibly pleasing to the eye. I also miss minor design choices like separators between the list of login items. That way you are never lost when you're typing the password.

Every single character of the password, in that large font mode has a different colour and a serial number displayed under every character. This comes in handy when websites or apps don't allow copy pasting or auto filling of passwords. 1Password has an option to reveal the password in a very large font size temporarily.
I also miss the small flourishes of 1Password. The new 1Password app, just like Bitwarden, is an electron app (but like I said elsewhere, if I have to choose between two electron apps, I'll choose one which offers better value, which in this case is Bitwarden). I miss the native 1Password app on macOS. I miss a few things and I love a few things. Just curious, never having been a 1Password user, would you please compare and contrast the two services? Are there things you miss from 1Password? Were you pleasantly surprised by anything in Bitwarden?
Use the guide on the Bitwarden website and you should be good to go. To everyone thinking about switching from 1Password, my suggestion is do it. I am already loving Bitwarden and cannot wait to explore it further. However, I will still opt for premium very soon just to support the service and give them my thanks. I like to keep my TOTPs in a separate app for security reasons anyway). I have not signed up for the subscription yet (mostly because I have only just started using it, but also because I do not need many of the features in the Premium segment. The 1Password to Bitwarden export works really well and everything was copied over including notes and additional details. The transition couldn't have been smoother. I had been thinking of switching over to Bitwarden for a long time (not just because it's lower cost/free) but because it ticked all the right boxes - open source, an inclination to listen to user feedback and recommendation from Privacy Tools IO.Ī few days back, I finally made the jump. But I am not a fan of forced subscriptions or their latest "updated" app which really is a downgrade (Although both are electron apps, Bitwarden offers better value as a service).
